How to Look Like a Movie Star on your Next Video Call

As sales professionals, video calls have become an integral part of our daily routine. Whether it’s a business meeting or a sales presentation, making a lasting impression on camera is more important than ever. Here are some tips to help you elevate your video presence and command attention on your next call or sales presentation:

  • Background: The right backdrop can set the scene for success. Choose a well-lit area with a clean and clutter-free background that reflects your personal style. Whether it’s a sleek home office or a cozy corner of your living room, make sure it’s a space where you feel comfortable and confident.
  • Lighting: Lighting is crucial for looking your best on camera. Natural light is ideal, so position yourself facing a window if possible. Avoid harsh overhead lighting and opt for soft, diffused light sources instead. Consider investing in a ring light or adjustable desk lamp to enhance your lighting setup and eliminate shadows on your face.
  • Sound: Sound quality is one of the most typically overlooked production values. Find a quiet spot, free from noise and distractions (barking dogs, wandering kids, or loud appliances). High-quality Bluetooth wireless earbuds that feature a good mic are a great alternative to the speaker and microphone on your computer, most of which aren’t great quality. Slip these on to ensure clear audio without any interference. Or for top-notch sound quality, you might consider investing in a premium external microphone. There are great ones available at affordable rates.
  • What to Wear (And What Not to Wear): Your outfit choice can make a big impact on how you come across on camera. Stick to solid colors or very subtle patterns that won’t distract from your message. Avoid busy prints, loud colors, logos, or overly casual attire.
  • Camera Angle: Pay attention to your camera angle to ensure a flattering view. Position your camera at eye level or slightly above to avoid unflattering angles. Sit back in your chair and frame yourself from the chest up, with enough space above your head to avoid a cramped look. Ideally, your head will fill roughly one-quarter of the frame. Lift your chin slightly and look directly at the webcam when you’re talking. Experiment with different angles until you find the one that works best for you.
  • Posture: Good posture can make all the difference in how you come across on camera. Sit up straight, shoulders back, and chin up to exude confidence and authority.

And that’s it! With these simple tips, you can steal the spotlight on their next video call or presentation.
